TV Watching!

It’s me again, Karen’s Husband, as she continues to work on a “Secret Assignment”.

We watch TV, not so much during the day, but usually one or two shows each evening. I like TV, especially the mystery and cop shows. Not to much into the reality shows or game shows. I do watch the News, that is if I’m still in our TV room (living Room) when it comes on. Having written the news portion of the Newscast on channel 13 in Las Vegas by myself, not including sports and weather, I guess it’s a habit. Want to see what is being reported. Have to tell you, I some nights sit there and talk to the TV and question their sequence of stories. Also what they’re reporting. News Reporting has changed so much since the 60s.

Another thing I notice on the different shows is the furniture. So many of the shows feature modern furniture, and while it’s not what we have in our house….I wouldn’t mind some at all.

Guess that’s one of the great things about TV, it opens your eyes to the way other people live and how they furnish their homes. Now then again, not every American household is finished quite the way they are on TV. But it’s fun to dream.

Then is not Now.

Once again, I’m sitting in for Karen. She has asked me to keep her blog active as she has other things that she has to concentrate on.

Growing up in Colorado as I did, and spending my 4 years in high school on a working ranch 69 miles from Phoenix as I did. Believe it or not, I was some what of a Horse man.

When I hit my teens, each summer would be spend up in the mountains at camp and I earned an award for horsemanship. Not only did you have to show the counselors that you could ride a horse, there was a written test, and you also had to show that you could care for your horse. I didn’t pass in the first year, frankly cause it was no big deal to me that first year. But after that, it became an obsession. And I did it.

At the ranch school, if you wanted, you were assigned a horse and you and you alone were to take care of it, even when not riding. It was your responsibility. While the school made available the horse supplies , needed to care for it, you had to use them wisely in addition to carrying for the horse.

Now that was 40 some years ago. I haven’t been near a horse in at least 30 years. But, it must have been good training for the care I give out now. Is that ever cool!!!

The Day Before.

Here it is July 3rd, tomorrow we celebrate the independence of our country. What a wonderful day, to remember what this country is about and what it’s been through. Also what it has done. America is not perfect but it has done so many good things that outnumber the bad.

Karen and I in the past have traveled over to San Diego, a easy drive for us, from here in Scottsdale. By doing so we get to spend the Holiday, which is also Karen’s Mom’s birthday… I’ve been told that is really the reason for all the fireworks. But this year we’re staying here. That in itself is another story, much too long for a single blog. Maybe another time. You can visit normradio.com, tomorrow and see the fireworks from a few years ago when we were there. A link is off to the side. Take a look.

Karen and I also like talking to each other and thinking out loud about what we could do together. I have always thought that it would be fun to just take off and travel across America. There is so much to see. While the states of Arizona, Colorado, and California have a lot to offer, from a beauty stand point, it’s not confined to those three states. Not by a long shot.

Nice thing about traveling is that there is so much available, like Hilton Head rentals , boy would that be fun.

Right now, we’re planning to be here, even with the high temperatures that we’re experiencing, but there is a good chance in a few weeks we will journey over to San Diego.

Coming Up

When I sit down to write, I just love to write. Give me a computer and a screen that I can see, (poor eyesight) and I just type away.

When I was in broadcasting full time, computers were a thing of the future. Boy I can just imagine how much fun they would have made it. Now listen to me, I worked with computers at the last station I was with. How could I forget. In fact I was the one who helped to install a computer system at the station that controlled the programing of the FM station. It was an AM and FM combo here in Arizona. The AM stayed live with real DJs playing music from Cd’s. The FM took a feed from a programing service and there was no one actually at the station.

Maybe one of the reasons I forgot about using a computer was the fact that Iam fast approaching 65. Age does effect one’s body parts. I’m all most old enough for Medicare. This would be a great time to look into getting a medicare advantage plan.

It’s good that I’m married to Karen, who could be there with me if one of my body parts…..my brain stopped working and I had a laps of memory.

Life with Karen.

What a great idea I had, write about what it’s like to live with Karen.

First of all, we are 20 or more years apart in age. It really does me good to be seen with such a beautiful young woman. I really dig it.

She is smarter than I am. I, kinda like Peter Jennings, never completed College but it never really got in the way of working in broadcasting. Might now, but really now my age gets in the way much faster.

She loves to do things. I love to stay at home so that has changed my day to day life. I have found that I enjoy getting out. Thought I didn’t, but I do, especially with her.

She understands politics, I get angry with politics.

She loves to shop. I could pass on shopping other than such places as best buy , that to me is a fun store. I love equipment.

Another thing in common, we both love to eat out.

On Assignment!

Before you get too far into this post, let me tell you that I”m not digital Karen. I’m Mr. Karen, or the guy with the itchy mustache.

Karen’s husband — who is going to step in and guest blog every once in a while.

I’m going to assume that you know all about Karen but, I might be a mystery.

Just a quick overview of me:

Born Greenwich, Ct, raised in Denver, Colo. Started work there, then to Scottsdale, Arizona (where we are now), then to Las Vegas. I worked in Broadcasting, and owned a two-way radio shop, a wheelchair van rental and a video production company. Karen and I will be married ten years come this January.

Taking a little from my past, I really enjoyed being in Las Vegas, as a news director for a radio station and also a TV Anchor. Every once and a while I would travel as a reporter up to Reno, Nevada to cover a news event. I remember that I always enjoyed staying in the Reno Hotels. Never got the opportunity to stay in a hotel while in Las Vegas.

More or less this post is a simple introduction to me as guest blogger.

TV Cheats

One of the few programs I enjoy watching on PBS is Mystery.  It usually airs on Sunday evenings as part of the Masterpiece Theater schedule.  Norm introduced me to the likes of Inspector Morse and now we enjoy watching its spinoff series Inspector Lewis.  Other favorites include Inspector Lindley, Hetty Wainthropp, Miss Marple, Foyle’s War and of course Poirot.  There’s only one problem, it’s often difficult to understand the dialogue because of the heavy non-American English accents and idioms.  Fortunately there is an easy solution.  It’s called closed captioning and it works marvelously.  If you don’t get the gist of the conversation you can read along and easily figure out what’s going on.  I’ve also learned a new word or two as well along the way.

TV Dinners

Norm was about to make a grilled cheese, tomato and pesto sandwich for me when he realized we were out of bread.  OK, plan B. he’s on his way to In-n-Out Burger to pick me up a number three combo since we have no other food in the house.

Because it’s just the two of us and we’re together all day, we usually watch TV while we eat dinner.  I don’t recommend this for most married couples because it doesn’t encourage conversation, but we talk all day long so it’s no big deal to us.  Over the years we have learned there are certain TV programs you don’t watch while you’re eating.  For instance, CSI: Las Vegas.  I mean who wants to watch them dissecting a murder victim while you’re munching down on a hamburger?  Dirty Jobs is another show I don’t watch while eating.  Also, it’s good to avoid any kind of documentary that deals with the human body or insects.  Comedies are also quite dangerous to view while dining because you could choke on your french fries while laughing at the latest antics of Frasier Crane.  About the only safe programs for viewing while dining are anything discussing the stock market or term life insurance.
